The limestone pinnacles of Mount Api

The Gunung Mulu National Park is a national park in Miri, Sarawak. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rain forest setting. The park is famous for its caves and the expeditions that have been mounted to explore them and their surrounding rain forest.

The national park is named after Mount Mulu, the second highest mountain in Sarawak. This place has great adventure trails into the surrounding jungle and the amazing caves. The hikes will take you on tiny trails that crosses rivers every half an hour. The guides are amazing and come from the tribes of head hunters that have lived there for thousands of years. They have some of the biggest caves and the most bats of anywhere in the world. They have all day caving trips both for beginners interested in trying and for experienced cavers.

The national park has three climbing treks: The Pinnacles Summit Trek, The Headhunter's Trail, and Gunung Mulu Summit Trek. The Pinnacles Summit Trek is a 3 days/2 nights trek leading to the view of the Gunung Mulu Pinnacles. The trek is usually starts with a one or two hours boat ride from Melinau river to Kuala Berar (Berar delta). The Base Camp 5 is a 7.8 km walk from Kuala Berar. Camp 5 is located near the Melinau Gorge which separates Mount Benarat from Mount Api. After Camp 5, there is a 1.2 km trek rising 1,200 metres; passing from dipterocarp forest to moss forest. The last section requires ropes and ladders to help with the climb.

Hidden underneath the forested slopes of these mountains is one of the largest limestone cave system in the world. This system, a breath-taking natural wonder, contains a number of record breaking caves. With the world’s largest cave passage (Deer Cave), the world’s largest natural chamber (Sarawak Chamber), and the longest cave in Southeast Asia (Clearwater Cave), it is not surprising that Mulu is now world-famous. Over 200 Km of cave passages have been surveyed but this is thought to represent just 30-40% of the actual total.
